15 years ago I met life coach Alisdair Stewart. At the time, I was working as a radio producer with the BBC. I was winning awards for my work. I had a partner, good friend, busy social life and a beautiful home with two cats. I had a lot to be grateful for, so why wasn’t I happy?
Well the truth was, my relationship was miserable, I was in debt, overweight; my mental and physical health wasn't great and I found myself trying to blot out feelings I didn’t want to acknowledge. I was curious about what a life coach did. Alisdair explained he supported people to reach their true potential, then bluntly told me - "You could do with some life coaching”.
Alisdair was very intuitive and could see through the façade and the mask I was putting on for the world. It took me four months to pluck up the courage to book my first life coaching session because asking for help made me feel like a failure. I now know how brave I actually was; it takes courage to look at your life and admit it's not turned out as you had hoped. It takes even more courage to face it and do something about it. I started to see Alisdair regularly, even though it was painful and uncomfortable to open up there was something really powerful about voicing them out loud. I realised how ridiculous, limiting and negative my thoughts had become (or always were). Alisdair was kind, patient, and non-judgemental and encouraged me to look at each area of my life.
I absorbed myself in personal development, reading every self help book I could find, attending workshops, watching Ted talks, as well as keeping up with the weekly life coaching sessions, which I could ill afford due to the debt I was in, but I also couldn’t afford not to! This was the only thing I was spending my money on that would actually help me to change my life and bring me the happiness I was so desperate for. The more I worked on myself, the more I started to see my life improve.
However, in 2010, my biggest challenge was yet to come. My beautiful mum and sister were both diagnosed with terminal cancer within four months of each other. I had already lost my dad 11 years earlier to cancer, when I was just 24. I never really recovered from losing dad, but nothing prepared me for the pain that was to come from the loss of my mum and sister.
Not only did I lose my mum and sister Christine, I also split with my partner, which meant selling our home. Then there was the loss of my brother and his family. We hadn’t had the best of relationships but it completely deteriorated after the death of my mum and sister. Whilst he is still alive, we've had no contact for 10 years now. They say divorce, bereavement and moving house are the top three stressors to go through in life - I had all three in the space of six months. I also became a carer and guardian for my other sister, Shelly. Shelly had been born breech and was given too much oxygen which left her brain damaged, partially sighted and with limited communication. I always knew I would look after Shelly when my parents passed away, but I had just always assumed that I would be married, with my own kids and supported by my other siblings. This wasn’t my situation and I effectively became a single mum overnight, with no other family support.
The challenges kept coming, everything I had known in my life had been turned upside down, even my job, which I’d been so good at, was now affected as I struggled to cope under the stress and grief of my situation. Each morning I would wake up and for a few seconds in my bleary state, I'd have a few seconds of relief, but then the familiar pain returned to my heart as I remembered the losses. I remember when I stopped (because I just kept myself busy) the physical pain in my heart would literally stop me breathing.
I remember waking one morning and thinking about life after death. I believe that we go to a place of unconditional love, a place of deep joy. I started questioning why I was sticking around to suffer this pain when I could just check out and end my suffering.
This wasn't like me me to think this way, my nick name is 'Suzy Sunshine'. I knew then that if I was to turn this situation around, I needed to dig deep and really start applying the personal development tools that I'd been learning. Theory is one thing, but application is the key. I can honestly say I wouldn't be here today had it not been for the application of personal development techniques; plus the continued support and life coaching of Alisdair.
I have now changed every aspect of my life, the way I think, my health, my diet (carnivore gone vegan) I no longer drink alcohol, I exercise and meditate daily. I’ve got rid of all toxic people and relationships in my life and only surround myself with people who lift me up. Now I’m doing my dream job, inspiring others to make positive changes in their lives through my Change Your World coaching services, so completely overhauling my working life too.
None of this happened overnight, it has been years of consistent personal development and working on each area of my life; implementing changes one at a time and trying new things and finding out what serves me and makes my heart sing. I feel so alive now and live with energy, vitality and happiness. I’ve become truly comfortable with myself, which just makes life so much easier. I’m not people pleasing, not feeling the pressure to be something I’m not and have fully accepted myself.
Of course, there is still work to be done, there will always be another level and the challenges of life don't just automatically stop, but I do handle them very differently now and feel more equipped when the curveballs come my way. The true beauty of developing myself is the ripple effect for the world, not only has it changed my world and my immediate environment for the better, but my daily actions are now inspiring others and changing the world in the process.
I’m so grateful that I met Alisdair and I listened when he told me I needed life coaching. I believe everyone needs a coach; of course, it’s possible to do it on your own, but a coach gives us accountability, direction and support. Change isn’t easy, it will bring up obstacles, resistance, fear and objection from others, but I’m living proof it’s worth it. I can never repay the people, books, support and advice that have shaped me in the person I am today, so all there is to do is to pay it forward and support others to change their world too.
